Happy New Year, Friends of ZuZu!

During an interview the other day for EATERAZ, which by the way had little to do with my cooking philosophy, I was asked if I was worried about the current state of the country considering I have two teenage daughters. I mean really, were the “good old days” really that good? I’m thrilled that today we live in an enlightened society that is so concerned about pesticides, sustainability, recycling, solar power and purchasing local. I visited Singh Farm the other day on Thomas and the 101 and was blown away over the magnitude of their composting program. I like the fact that today’s diners are well informed and care where their food comes from.

We have been up and down the west coast so often during the last four years that I thought we would start 2010 with something totally new. While we’ve featured Australian and New Zealand wines on our ZuZu list, we’ve never built a Chef’s Table around them. That’s about to change. On January 11th we’re bringing together a collection from some of the best wineries down under -- Brancott, Stoneleigh, Wyndham and Jacob’s Creek. Check out the menu below; we’re determined to show off the versatility and distinctive characteristics of these awesome wines!

On Monday January 25th, we are proud to welcome Zaca Mesa, one of the pioneer wineries in Santa Barbara County. Located in the Santa Ynez AVA, their estate is only 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean. As the valleys orient east to west, unlike most parts of the California coast, the vineyard is open directly to the cooling marine influences that include morning fog and afternoon breezes, making this property a unique site for growing grapes. We’re uncorking their yummy Chardonnay, Viognier, Z Cuvee and Z Three for this very special dinner.

I could fill up two pages with all the cool events and dinners we were involved in this past year, from our Sebastiani Monday Night Chef’s Table and the “NBA Cares & Cooks” in February to “Crave” last October and our sold-out Moet & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot Chef’s Table in December; it’s been a wild ride. As fun as it is to reminisce, it’s more exciting to move forward and build on all the accomplishments of 2009. The great James Nassikas told me 25 years ago that “we are only as good as today.” It’s a constant reminder that unlike other forms of art, the culinary arts and the service that defines the guest experience can’t rest on the past; we can only consider it practice for what we do today, and tomorrow. And that’s how we roll.

All the best for a healthy and prosperous New Year!
