October is a magical month in Arizona. It was awesome to experience the first watermelons, the Washington cherries, heirloom tomatoes and sweet corn, but I love the variety of tastes as summer rolls into fall. It’s time for pears, tender Swiss chard and winter squash alongside the berries and tomatoes. The cooler weather means that Duncan’s Farm is back in business after a long, hot summer and you’ll be seeing those beautiful vegetables on ZuZu’s menu by the time you read this newsletter.

Autumn marks the beginning of the local social season as well, and we’ve been invited once again to participate in Zoofari at the Phoenix Zoo on October 3rd. This fun, formal affair is spread out over a good portion of the zoo, and you can expect some memorable food and wine tasting (especially from ZuZu and Trader Vic’s, of course), a silent auction, music and an occasional animal encounter. We will also be a part of the inaugural Savor Scottsdale Food & Wine event from October 23rd to the 25th, held just a few blocks north of Hotel Valley Ho at Southbridge. Who doesn’t think of Oktoberfest this time of year, and what could be more appropriate than a superb German brew? In Germany, beer is a big deal, and we are proud to feature one of Germany’s oldest, most respected breweries. Please welcome Beck’s Brewery on Monday October 6th as we design a menu around their extraordinary beers.

Frog’s Leap has always been one of my favorite wineries. They’ve been growing their grapes organically since 1988, and believe “that the greatest of wines are those that most truly reflect their soil, climate and circumstance (collectively referred to as terroir) and it is the winemaker’s role to stand back and let the natural beauty of the grapes show through.” Hmmm, sounds a lot like the way we feel about food. Join us on Monday night, October 20th, as we pair the cuisine of ZuZu with Frog’s Leap’s delicious wines.

One of my proudest moments recently was to see how well attended our Chef’s Table was on September 8th, the first Monday Night Football of the season! It’s so refreshing that so many of you have your priorities in order.
